Butlers Chocolates Time Line

Since Butlers' foundation in 1932, they have been striving for chocolate excellence. Just take a look at their history and you will see how proud they are to be bringing happiness to the world, one chocolate at a time.

1932: Ms. Bailey Butler realizes her ambition to create little moments of happiness through her chocolate making enterprise on Lad Lane in Dublin, Ireland. 

1959: Ms. Butler's company was purchased by Mr. Seamus Sorensen and he continues to run the business as a small specialized chocolatier. 

1978: The next generation of the Sorensen family assume running of the business. 

1984: The Butlers Irish Chocolates brand is born. It is named in memory of Ms Marion Bailey Butler, their original purveyor of happiness. 

1988: Butlers Chocolates relocate from Lad Lane to the IDA Enterprise Centre on Pearse Street in Dublin. 

1989: Butlers Chocolates first retail outlet opens on Dublin’s finest shopping street, Grafton Street, which is in the heart of Dublin City Center. 

1996: Due to continued growth and expansion, Butlers Chocolates relocate to a riverside location overlooking the river Liffey on Sir John Rogersons Quay, Dublin. 

1998: goes live, striving to bring happy chocolate moments to customers around the globe. The inaugural Butlers Chocolate Café opens in a beautiful corner building on Dublin’s Wicklow Street offering a wide range of premium handmade chocolates and delectable hot and cold beverages, including Butlers Hot Chocolate. 

1999: A new café on Chatham Street quickly follows suit. 

2000: Butlers flagship café opens in Dublin Airport and the Nassau Street branch also opens in Dublin 2. 

2003: Butlers Chocolates relocate to a state of the art production facility in Clonshaugh, Dublin 17. Butlers Chocolates is awarded the prestigious Brand Marketing Award from Bord Bia in the Irish Food and Drink Industry Awards. 

2004: Butlers Chocolates open a new café on Henry Street, Dublin 1.

2005: The first Butlers Chocolate Café outside Dublin is launched in Cork on Oliver Plunkett Street. 

2006: Butlers Chocolates launch their first organic chocolate range with four delicious 100g Organic chocolate bars. Butlers open their eighth café on William Street, Galway. Butlers Chocolate Café Kiosk opens in Heuston Train Station, Dublin 8. In a first time collaboration, Butlers Chocolates launch an exclusive range of chocolates with acclaimed Irish Fashion designer, Orla Kiely. In response to growing customer demand, Butlers Chocolates introduce their very first dark chocolate selection. 

2007: Butlers launch a new 240g Organic Chocolate Assortment, containing a delicious selection of 18 chocolates. Butlers first international franchisee opens a café in New Zealand. Butlers Chocolate Café ice cream is launched in three delicious flavours. Butlers second café in Dublin Airport opens on Pier B. Butlers 100g Organic White Chocolate with Raspberry bar is a gold medal winner at the Great Taste Awards. The Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, Dublin 15 welcomes the arrival of a new Butlers Chocolate Café. Butlers Chocolate Café opens on Liffey Street, Dublin 1. Butlers Chocolates new website is launched. November - A second Butlers Chocolate Café is opened in Westfield Queensgate, New Zealand. December - Butlers Chocolates open a new café in The Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords. 

2008: February - Butlers introduce a new 200g Chocolate cube range in three flavours; Milk chocolate Caramels, Milk Chocolate Hazelnut Pralines and Dark Chocolate with Mint. June - Butlers launch a new Take Home Ice Cream Range. Butlers Chocolate Café wins two awards at the prestigious Shopfitting & Display Industry Awards 2008 August - Butlers Crispy Praline wins a Gold Great Taste award. 

2009: March - Butlers launch a new range of 100g chocolate bars, two of which go on to win Blas na hEireann awards October - Butlers are the very proud recipients of a highly acclaimed Frontier Award November - Butlers first Chocolate Café in Pakistan opens in Karachi 

2010: January - Butlers launch three new additions to the highly popular 100g Bar range. The new flavours include Milk Chocolate, Milk Chocolate with Hazelnuts and 70% Dark Chocolate. The range is extended during the summer to include a White Chocolate Vanilla Bar. July - Butlers 100g Milk Chocolate with Hazelnuts bar wins a prestigious Gold Great Taste Award. December - Butlers Chocolate Cafe Clonshaugh opens at our head office in Dublin. 

2011: January - Butlers introduce two whole nut varieties to the 100g Bar range; Butlers Milk Chocolate with Whole Hazelnuts and Butlers Dark Chocolate with Whole Almonds. February - Butlers Chocolate Experience opens at the end of February. April - A third Butlers Chocolate Cafe opens in North City - Porirua, New Zealand.
